3 Quick Takeaways from Meta Connect

Reasonable XR Headset
After the mostly dull first act, we got an overview of the Metaquest Pro as well as a price tag which is actually reasonable considering what it is.
Some may baulk at a $1,500 price but this is an extended (or mixed) reality tech rather than just another VR headset. Besides the unnecessary focus on stats, the Quest Pro appears to be fully capable of delivering sleek extended reality experiences with inward facing cameras and self-contained computers within each controller!
Now to see if the software and openness of the metaverse will be forgiving to this device.
The Metaverse Is Not Just Hype
Talking about the metaverse, the appearance of Julie Sweet of Accenture and Satya Nadella of Microsoft were of particular interest. Not because of the announcements and warm partnership but more that they are actively investing to make the metaverse work across companies.
As some of my previous articles here and here noted, the metaverse has a high potential to bring about a significant change in our lifetime. It is not just a buzz word; it will truly mean bringing people together on across digital platforms.
Humans and Machines
And, most importantly, is the 3rd act covering the neat technology Meta is experimenting with. I’ll hand it to Meta that they understand the importance of bringing people closer and they are positioned well to take their “social layer” and support it with a variety of technology.
Many of these had one key thing in common: the dependence on machine learning Ai. From avatar leg placement, to playing games, to “metahumans” avatars that look eerily close to reality.
This technology will continue playing an increasingly important role in filling the gap between what humans intend to do and what can be feasibly done at scale for high quality digital experiences.
